Great things to do This “Holiday Season” in Vancouver

(Photo: VanDusen Botanical Gardens)

The holiday season in Vancouver is upon us! Though we may not live in a snowy winter wonderland, there are still plenty of ways for Vancouverites to get into the festive feel with events happening all month long around the city.

The VanDusen Botanical Gardens holds its Festival of Lights again this year. Stroll through the holiday florals in the beautifully manicured gardens bedecked in a million glittering lights and see a different side to this horticultural hot spot.

Spend Christmas in the clouds atop Grouse Mountain. Enjoy an enchanted sleigh ride through the wintry alpine forest, visit Santa’s workshop and finish off the visit with a skate on the magical mountain-top pond.

The Holidays are near, but what shall we do?

‘Twas the week before Christmas and all over the city,
Vancouver homes hummed a holiday ditty.
But one Christmas couple were feeling distraught,
For festive gift-giving plans they had not.

“We still need a gift for the host of that dinner!
And a gift for the neighbours, but time, it grows thinner!

Roses evoke romance, love & beauty. Revered for its velvety petals and heavenly scent, it is desired in the home and garden. Roses are grown all over the world to supply the demands of the flower market. Long lasting Ecuadorean and Columbian roses are desired by florists and rose lovers of the twenty-second century. They open to lush, full blooms 3-4 inches in diameter. They lend themselves to classic arrangements as well the mod, contemporary designs of today.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE LIMP LEAVES ON YOUR PHALAENOPSIS ORCHID PLANT

A phaleanopsis orchid plant that has pale, limp leaves are suffering from heat and over watering. The phaleanopsis likes to be in indirect light, such as north, northeast, and northwest. It really doesn’t like being close to a window. Glass will magnify heat and cold, which causes harm to the phaleanopsis orchid plant. It will thrive even in the darkest corners of your home or office.

Remove the badly damaged leaves that are very soft. The leaves that are still firm to the touch may plump back up with some TLC. If you have healthy roots, they are rounded and firm to the touch and grayish in colour with greenish tips.  This orchid plant might bounce back, but it may take a few weeks to see some real improvement.

Choosing and keeping a Phalaenopsis orchid plant healthy – Part 2

As an orchid plant lover, I recommend choosing a plant with 3 or 4 open blooms and at least as many flower buds, for the enjoyment of 8 to 12 weeks of flowering. If you are lucky, your phalaenopsis orchid plant can bloom for as long as 16 weeks or more! You will enjoy an orchid plant in full bloom for approximately 4 to 8 weeks.
